Downtown Tempe kicks off the holiday season on Mill Avenue. From 4 PM, snack and drink vendors, live music and roaming street entertainers set up along the route; the parade of floats, performers and holiday characters steps off at 6 PM, and viewing is first come, first served, so families with small children should arrive early to claim a curbside spot. After the parade the celebration moves to CenterPoint Plaza for the lighting of Downtown Tempe's 36-foot holiday tree, more live music, photos with Santa and a letter-writing station where kids can send wishes to the North Pole. The event page lists free weekend parking options at the 201 S. Ash garage (excluding special events) and recommends Valley Metro light rail to the Veterans Way/College Ave or Mill Ave/3rd St stations.
