About this adventure
A 3.2-acre historic park near downtown Raleigh around the Mordecai House (c. 1785), the oldest house in Raleigh on its original site and once the center of Wake County's largest plantation, home to the Lane and Mordecai families and to enslaved and freed African Americans. One-hour guided tours visit the house and historic buildings, which include the birthplace of President Andrew Johnson, a plantation office, smokehouse, kitchen, law office, St. Mark's Chapel and a recreated 1830s kitchen garden. Families can also pick up a self-guided map of the exteriors and grounds, see the free permanent and rotating exhibits in the Visitor Center, and try the printable 'Digital Discoveries' activities and board game.
