About this adventure

The North Carolina Museum of Art's annual Winter Lantern Walk is a community paper-lantern procession through the Museum Park at dusk in mid-December. Families make their own lantern at home beforehand, lit only with battery-operated lights (no candles or flames), using tissue paper, cardstock, papier-mâché or a store-bought paper lantern they decorate, and the museum posts lantern-making tips on the event page. Everyone gathers on the Ellipse from 4:30 pm to see each other's lanterns, the procession sets off together at 5:30 pm for a slow, peaceful walk through the park, and festivities wrap up by 6:30 pm. Families without a lantern are welcome to come and watch. In the spirit of the season of light, the museum collects donations at the Ellipse: gently used coats, gloves and hats for WRAL Coats for the Children, pet supplies for the Wake County Animal Center, and pantry items or toiletries for InterAct. It will be dark and crowded near a pond, so children must stay with an adult; leave pets at home.
