About this adventure

A New Year's Day guided hike to the dinosaur tracks preserved in Government Canyon's creek bed. A hundred million years ago this corner of Bexar County sat on an ocean shoreline, and a sauropod and a theropod left footprints in the beach mud that are now rock. The guide leads a five-mile round trip (2.5 miles each way) over rough, rocky ground with some climbs and descents, and explains what scientists know about the animals at the tracksite. It is open to hikers aged 8 and up, with minors accompanied by a parent or guardian, and no pets. Meet at the Rainwater Tower outside the Visitor Center (closest parking in Lots A and B); the group leaves promptly at 1 p.m. and only the first 15 to check in can go. Bring at least two liters of water per person, a snack, layers and broken-in hiking shoes, and expect a line at the fee booth on First Day.
