About this adventure

Start the new year outdoors with a guided family hike at Government Canyon on New Year's Day. Volunteer leaders take families on a leisurely walk of a little over two miles around the Savannah Loop, a mostly flat dirt-and-rock trail, stopping to talk about wildlife, native plants and whatever the children spot along the way. The hike is meant for parents, grandparents or guardians with their kids; strollers are not advised, but small children can ride in a carrier backpack, and pets are not allowed. Only the first 15 people to check in at the Frontcountry Trailhead by Parking Lot C between 9:30 and 9:45 a.m. can join, and the group leaves promptly at 10. Bring a liter of water per person, sturdy shoes, sun protection and a snack. Buying a day pass online in advance speeds entry at the fee booth but does not reserve a hike spot.
