- Texas Parks and Wildlife – Government Canyon State Natural Area
On the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, knowledgeable volunteers lead a walk at Government Canyon State Natural Area about the historical and present-day relationships between native plants, animals and people in the canyon. The planned route is about 1.25 miles on the Discovery Trail, which has a crushed-granite surface. It is for ages 10 and up, with minors accompanied by a parent or legal guardian; no pets. No registration is required — meet at the rainwater tower at the Visitor Center (closest parking Lots A or B). Dress in layers, wear comfortable shoes and bring at least 32 oz of water per person. The activity is free, but the Natural Area's entrance fee applies, and the park often fills to capacity, so a pre-purchased day pass is recommended.
