The backcountry stop on the Hawktober tour: a free Sunday-morning raptor program at the Santa Ysabel Nature Center on Highway 79, between Ramona and Julian. Rangers present live hawks, owls or falcons and talk about how these birds of prey live and hunt in San Diego County's oak woodlands and grasslands. The session runs 11 a.m. to noon; the nature center's exhibits and nearby preserve trails make it easy to stretch the visit, and a pumpkin carving party follows at the same center that afternoon (registration was full when checked). All ages are welcome.
