A Lost Pines Chapter Texas Master Naturalist leads this one-hour foraging primer through the woods of Lockhart State Park, pointing out the wild plants that are safe to eat and how to tell them from look-alikes. Free samples are handed out along the way, which tends to keep younger hikers interested. The route is a three-quarter-mile walk on moderate terrain starting from the Creekview Trailhead (from park headquarters take the first left, pass the campgrounds and park along the paved loop). All ages are welcome and no registration is needed. Wear sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing, bring water, and put on sunscreen or bug repellent as needed. The walk itself is free; families pay the regular park entrance fee ($3 per adult, children 12 and under free).
