The Massachusetts DCR Universal Access Program runs adaptive ice sessions at East Boston's Porrazzo Skating Rink for people with disabilities, their families, support staff and friends. Participants can go on the ice in a wheelchair, an ice sled, a skate walker, ice grippers or regular skates, and the session is built around play: pucks and colorful balls to shoot, obstacle courses, races and a tower of blocks to knock down. Family members are encouraged to join on the ice, and Yaktrax ice grippers are available in the lobby for anyone who cannot skate. Each participant signs up for a time slot and skates for one hour. Pre-registration is required and must be requested by 12 p.m. two days before the session. Dress warmly with a winter coat, gloves or mittens and a hat.
