Brockton's Asiaf Arena hosts two winter sessions of the Massachusetts DCR Universal Access Program's adaptive skating for people with disabilities and the family members, friends and support staff who come with them. Skaters can use wheelchairs, ice sleds, skate walkers, ice grippers or ordinary skates, and the ice is set up for gentle games with pucks, colorful balls, obstacle courses, races and a block tower to crash. Everyone in the group is encouraged to join on the ice, and Yaktrax ice grippers are offered in the lobby for those who cannot skate. Sign-up is by one-hour time slot, and registration must be requested by 12 p.m. two days ahead. The rink is cold, so bring a winter coat, gloves or mittens and a hat.
