Downtown Chesterton's Hometown Holiday Celebration fills a Saturday after Thanksgiving with small-town holiday traditions run by the Duneland Chamber of Commerce. The day opens with a holiday edition of Chesterton's European Market from 8 a.m., with local vendors, artists and food stalls around Broadway and Third Street next to Thomas Centennial Park. As it gets dark the Twilight Parade steps off at 5:15 p.m. with decorated floats and vehicles from local businesses, community groups and residents, and when the parade ends children can visit Santa in the park. Sponsors also back horse-drawn wagon rides. It is a good outing for families with children of any age who want a hometown parade rather than a big-city one: bring blankets or folding chairs for the curb, dress for a cold evening, and arrive early to find parking and a spot along the route. The Chamber also encourages families to shop small at downtown businesses while they are there.
