About this adventure
Cranbrook Institute of Science stays open late on a Saturday in mid-November so families can try to catch the Leonid meteor shower. Visitors can use the Cranbrook Observatory, watch Acheson Planetarium programs and explore the museum's permanent exhibits plus the traveling exhibition Artificial Intelligence: Your Mind & The Machine. The planetarium runs a schedule through the evening: Night Sky Treasures at 7:30 pm (galaxies, nebulae and star clusters, with a short AI double feature), the music-and-visuals show Frequency: 199X at 8:30 pm, and Michigan Sky Tonight at 9:30 pm, a live-narrated look at the current sky that sends guests home with a star chart; these are recommended for grade 3 and up. The final 10:30 pm Pink Floyd show is for grade 10 and up and contains explicit lyrics. General admission is $19 for adults, $15 for children 2 to 12 and seniors, and free under 2. Meteor viewing depends on clear skies, so dress warmly for time outside.
