About this adventure
The DNR Outdoor Adventure Center on Detroit's riverfront opens early on the first Sunday of December for visitors with sensory processing differences, with the exhibits' sounds and ambient noise turned down and a quiet room stocked with sensory materials. The December theme is winter play indoors: children can throw soft "snowballs" at each other inside the heated building, a chance to burn off energy without cold fingers, wet boots or a crowd. Between rounds families can explore the center's hands-on exhibits about Michigan's outdoors, including its simulators, at their own pace. Staff are KultureCity-certified. The sensory-friendly window runs from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.; at noon the building opens to the public and sound levels go back to normal, so it suits children who do better with a calm start and a firm end time.
