About this adventure
Before the Outdoor Adventure Center opens to the general public on Sunday, the Department of Natural Resources runs two quieter hours for children and adults with sensory processing differences and their families. Building sounds and the background noise of the exhibits are turned down, a quiet room with sensory materials is set up for anyone who needs a break, and every staff member has KultureCity training. The November session brings in Jim and Carol from Nature Discovery with live reptiles and amphibians, so children can get up close to the animals and hear what makes reptiles and amphibians so interesting, without the noise of a crowded weekend afternoon. Families can also roam the center's hands-on exhibits and simulators about Michigan's outdoors. At noon the doors open to everyone and volume returns to normal, so families who want a calmer visit should plan to arrive close to 9:30.
