Start the new year on Friday, January 1, 2027 with a ranger-led sunrise walk on the beach at Galveston Island State Park, from 7 to 8 a.m., part of the nationwide First Day Hikes tradition. The walk covers about one mile on pavement, packed sand and loose sand, with very little shade, so hats and sunglasses help, and everyone will get sandy. All ages are welcome, including dogs. Bring sunscreen, bug spray, water, weather-appropriate layers and beach shoes. Meet at the beachside day-use area by the turtle statue. Park entry is $5 for adults and free for children 12 and under (free with a State Parks Pass); use the self-pay station since the office opens later. A 9 a.m. First Day bird walk is also listed the same morning.
