Organizer
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department — Galveston Island State Park

A New Year's Day bird walk at Galveston Island State Park led by a park ranger and birder, part of the first-day-of-the-year hikes that nature enthusiasts join across the country. The group meets at the Observation Tower parking lot and walks about a mile on gravel, turf, boardwalks and uneven terrain, observing local birdlife. The walk has very little shade, so hats and sunglasses are recommended; bring sunscreen, bug spray, water, weather-appropriate clothing, trail shoes and binoculars if you have them (the park has a limited number to lend). It runs from 9 to 10 a.m. Because the walk starts before the park office opens, check in at the self-pay station: entry is $5 for adults and free for children 12 and under, or free with a State Parks Pass.

What was checked & what still needs confirmation

Header dates the walk Friday, January 1, 2027, but the teaser still says 'Kick off 2026' (stale text carried over from last year). Confirm with the park. Separate from the already-listed Sunrise Beach Walk the same morning. The page is dated Friday, January 1, 2027, but its text still says 'Kick off 2026' (carried over from last year); confirm the 2027 walk closer to the date.
