About this adventure

A 1,400-acre state park at the north tip of Amelia Island built around a well-preserved 19th-century brick fort whose cannons face across the St. Marys River toward Georgia. Families can explore the fort's rooms, galleries and grounds and learn about the life of a Union soldier from living-history interpreters; on the first weekend of every month a soldier garrison fires cannons and demonstrates battlefield skills. Beyond the fort, maritime hammocks of arching live oaks line hiking and biking trails, including the Willow Pond Nature Trail, and the beaches are popular for shelling and shark-tooth hunting. Gopher tortoises and painted buntings are among the wildlife, and the park has a playground, picnic areas, fishing and camping.
