About this adventure

For five days in early December, Harwood Avenue in the Wauwatosa Village becomes a European-style Christmas market with vendor stalls, food stands, a heated beer tent in Root Common and live music. The part for children: Santa visits every day of the market, and kids can drop a letter to Santa into the market's mailbox and get a personalized reply. Sunday, December 6 has Donuts with Santa from noon to 3 p.m., and Thursday, December 3 coincides with the Tosa Cookie Trail from 4 to 7 p.m. Food leans traditional, with crepes, Bavarian pretzels, potato pancakes, flammenkuchen and sausages, plus hot chocolate for kids; adults will find German beer and mulled wine. The opening night, Wednesday, December 2, includes the village tree lighting at 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday have adult-focused themes (an ugly sweater contest and an après-ski wine and cheese tasting), so the weekday afternoons and Sunday are the easiest times with small children. Seven free public lots are within a five-minute walk.
