About this adventure

Lynden Sculpture Garden's Woodcraft Workshop is a beginner-friendly woodworking class for tweens and young teens built on Sloyd, the Scandinavian educational tradition of learning through making useful objects by hand. Over seven Wednesday afternoons, students learn traditional carving and hand-tool skills with carving knives, saws and other simple tools, completing a series of small projects that grow steadily more complex as their confidence, patience and craftsmanship build. No woodworking experience is needed. The registration fee includes a Mora 120 sloyd carving knife that each student keeps, and all other tools and materials are supplied. Classes meet in the garden's studio on its 40-acre grounds of park, lake and woodland in River Hills on Milwaukee's north edge. Groups are kept small and advance registration is required. It suits careful, hands-on 10- to 15-year-olds who like building things and can handle sharp tools under instruction.
