The Hip Hop Nutcracker — Kings Theatre, Brooklyn

About this adventure

The Hip Hop Nutcracker tour stops at Brooklyn's restored Kings Theatre in Flatbush for one evening two days before Christmas. Directed and choreographed by Jennifer Weber, the show remixes the classic: a dozen hip hop dancers, a DJ and an electric violinist carry Tchaikovsky's score, while Maria-Clara and the Nutcracker Prince battle a gang of mice and visit the land of sweets, with digital graffiti projections moving the story from 19th-century Germany to the sights and sounds of a modern city. Hip hop pioneer Kurtis Blow opens the show as MC. Billed as a holiday mash-up for the whole family, it suits school-age kids and teens who might find a traditional ballet slow. Doors open at 6 pm for a 7 pm start; street parking is limited, so the B41/B49/B103 buses or the subway are the easier way in.
