After its Chandler run, Ballet Etudes brings its 40th-anniversary Nutcracker to the Virginia G. Piper Repertory Theater at Mesa Arts Center for two mid-December weekends. Families follow Clara through the battle with the mice, the snow scene and the Land of Sweets with the Sugar Plum Fairy, set to Tchaikovsky's score. There are six performances: 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on the Saturdays (Dec 12 and 19) and 3 p.m. on the Sundays (Dec 13 and 20), so families can choose a matinee for younger children. All-in tickets are $45, and lap children 2 and under are free. Mesa Arts Center is at the corner of Main and Center Streets downtown; parking is $10 in the south lot or the Sirrine Street Garage, so allow extra time on busy holiday weekends.
