About this adventure
The Vanderbilts' 1895 summer "cottage" and the flagship of the Newport Mansions, a National Historic Landmark. Families can tour the house at their own pace with the free audio tour app, which includes first-person accounts from family members, servants and their children, and children can follow The Breakers Kids Tour, a self-guided adventure through the mansion (look for the dragon in the dining room and the dolphin under the stairs), included with regular admission. Guide-led Beneath The Breakers tours of the house's underground mechanical systems and tours of the third-floor family rooms run at set times. The back and south terraces are closed for restoration until November 2026, but the gardens and back lawn stay open. The house is partially accessible, with an elevator in service. Ticketed visitors enter through the main gates on Ochre Point Avenue at their scheduled time. Halloween and holiday-lights evenings are listed separately.
