About this adventure

On the first Saturday evening of December, Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site in Four Oaks lights the Harper House by candlelight and opens it for a nineteenth-century Christmas. Visitors tour the home of John and Amy Harper, decorated for the season as it might have been in the 1860s, and hear period music while they warm up with cider beside a fire. Outside, a festive wagon ride carries families around the grounds, re-enactors keep a soldiers' camp, and children can do holiday crafts and activities. It is a quieter, old-fashioned alternative to the big light shows, and a good way to bring a little history into a Johnston County Christmas outing. The evening runs from 5 to 8:30 pm on Saturday, Dec 5, 2026. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children 8 and under. Dress warmly, since the wagon ride and the soldiers' camp are outside on a December evening.
