About this adventure
Dix Park and the bike nonprofit Oaks and Spokes host a free holiday-themed family bike ride starting at Gipson Play Plaza on a December evening. Before the ride, children decorate their bikes and helmets and try a festive obstacle course, and organizers hand out free bike lights and reflective materials so everyone stays visible after dark. The group then rides 2.8 miles on park roads and greenways around Dix Park, with a cozy hot chocolate stop along the way. Children riding on their own should be comfortable balancing on a two-wheeled bike; balance bikes and bikes with training wheels are welcome for the pre-ride festivities, and parents can bring younger children on cargo bikes or child bike seats. Bring a helmet; families who need to borrow a bike can contact Oaks and Spokes' program manager in advance. Space is limited and free registration through Eventbrite opens two weeks before the ride at noon; the ride is canceled in bad weather.
