About this adventure

Volunteer astronomers from Friends of the Desert Mountains set up high-powered telescopes at Homme Adams Park in Palm Desert and point them at the full Moon, showing its craters, mountain ranges and old lava plains up close. Because the moonlight washes out faint galaxies, this evening is about the Moon itself, which makes it an easy first telescope night for school-age children and teens: the targets are big, bright and easy to find. Expect a quiet two hours outdoors above the city lights, checking in at the hike table by the Homestead Trail. RSVP is required, and the organizers cancel for heavy cloud, wind or rain, so check the weather before leaving. Bring a liter of water; no dogs near the telescopes. A $10 suggested donation per person supports the volunteer programs.
