On this ranger-led hike families learn how earlier inhabitants of Government Canyon, including Coahuiltecans, Lipan and Mescalero Apaches and Comanches, used native plants for food, medicine and fiber. The group identifies plants still growing in the park and does hands-on activities along the 1.5–2 mile backcountry route over rough, rocky ground (it moves to the Discovery Trail if other trails are closed by wet weather). Ages 10 and up; minors must come with a parent or guardian. Meet at the Visitor Center; Lots A and B are closest. No registration is needed, but the park often fills, so buying a day pass in advance is recommended. Bring at least 32 oz of water each.
