About this adventure

The Jewish Community Center of San Francisco lights its community hanukkiyah, the Hanukkah menorah, every weekday afternoon of the holiday: Friday, December 4, and Monday through Friday, December 7 to 11. Families can come from 4 PM for crafts, then at 4:30 sing along with musician Jonathan Bayer as one more candle is lit each night, and finish with a fried holiday treat. The whole gathering lasts about an hour, which makes it an easy after-school stop for young children, and it is free. The center explains the tradition along the way: the hanukkiyah holds nine candles, one for each night plus the shamash, the helper candle that lights the others. On the final Friday, December 11, families can arrive earlier for a hands-on challah-braiding workshop and go straight on to the eighth-night lighting.
