Exploratorium

A one-day Exploratorium program linking the migration of Monarch butterflies, whose arrival in Mexico often coincides with Día de Muertos, to the holiday's traditions. Visitors paint a butterfly or butterfly wing with a personal message on the back, which is added to the museum's Día de Muertos art installation made with the Marigold Project and students from Buena Vista Horace Mann elementary school. Entomologist Ralph Washington Jr. hosts a drop-in 'Ask an Entomologist' station from 11 am to 2 pm in Osher Gallery 1, and the Tinkering Studio runs Build a Better Butterfly, where kids make paper wings or a flapping clothespin automaton and test them with a fan. Kids also learn about metamorphosis and the role of pollinators. Included with museum admission.
