For its 36th annual Gingerbread Contest, Belleville's Gingerbread Committee and Parks and Recreation Department fill downtown merchant windows with gingerbread creations from local bakers from Nov. 24 through Jan. 5. Families can stroll the downtown district to spot the entries, and the displays pair well with other downtown holiday traditions listed by the city, such as Santa's house on the Public Square, the Christkindlmarkt and the free horse-drawn trolley rides on weekends. It is a self-guided, any-time activity, so it works for short attention spans: walk a block or two, look for gingerbread houses, and warm up in a shop or cafe.
