Astoria Park hosts a free Holiday Festival and Tree Lighting Celebration on the Great Lawn on Sunday, December 6, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. The NYC Parks listing promises performances and a special tree lighting, and tags the afternoon Best for Kids. The late-afternoon timing means the lights go on as dusk falls over the East River and the Hell Gate and RFK bridges that frame the park. It is a neighborhood-scale alternative to the crowds in Midtown, and no ticket is needed. Questions can go to the phone number and email listed on the NYC Parks event page.
