Berkeley Ballet's one-act, 70-minute Nutcracker, choreographed by Robin Dekkers, retells the story through the natural world. Mother Nature narrates as Clara and Charlie are swept into a snowy blizzard by a Nutcracker Bird and a Snowy Owl, then meet the Sunlight Fairy and dances of volcanoes, constellations, crystal caves, a cactus desert and fields of flowers, all set to Tchaikovsky's score. The multi-generational cast includes more than eighty dancers aged 6 to 18 from the school's Youth Division alongside adult and professional dancers. The short run time suits young audiences, and there are sweet treats before the show and Sunlight & Moonlight Fairy parties after every performance, when children can go onstage to meet the dancers and collect autographs. Performances are at the Regents' Theater in the Valley Center for Performing Arts on the former Holy Names University campus.
