About this adventure

The War Memorial opens its holiday season with a community tree lighting in front of the fountain on its Lake St. Clair grounds. Doors open at 4 pm for hot chocolate, live ice sculpting in front of the Alger House (with a family photo spot afterward), caroling, a holiday craft station in the Grosse Pointe Artists Association gallery and a vintage holiday market in the Alger House rooms; the 20-foot decorated tree is lit at 5:30 pm, when the winner of the gingerbread house competition is also announced. New this year, Santa visits in the ballroom after the ceremony for $5 per child, with a few pre-registration slots; walk-ups are welcome but may wait. The main event is free but registration is required. Parking is limited to the onsite lot and street, so allow extra time or walk. Food and drinks, including spiked cocoa for adults, are for sale. A gentle, all-ages outdoor and indoor evening for families with young children.
