About this adventure

Oakwoods Metropark naturalists run a two-hour family program on how forest animals get through a Michigan winter. Families learn the three main strategies wildlife uses when cold, snow and scarce food arrive: leaving the area (migration), sleeping or slowing down (hibernation and dormancy), or staying active and adapting. The program mixes discussion and hands-on examples inside the Nature Center with outdoor exploration in the forest, looking at the behaviors, body adaptations and survival skills that help different animals cope. It is designed for families with children ages 8 and up who are curious about wildlife, and each child must come with a registered adult. Dress for the weather, since part of the time is spent outside on the trails. Pre-registration is required by 4 p.m. the day before; cost is $4 per child and $5 per adult. A Metroparks vehicle pass is required to enter the park.
