About this adventure
The day after Halloween, Leesburg holds its first Pumpkin Smash: families bring their carved jack-o'-lanterns to Tuscarora Creek Park and smash them so the pumpkins go to compost instead of the landfill. Painted pumpkins are welcome after a stop at the Environmental Advisory Commission tent, where volunteers help strip paint and decorations. Around the smashing there are sustainable ornament-making with tree cookies, Loudoun Wildlife tips on leaving the leaves, and Virginia Cooperative Extension nutrition educators with pumpkin recipes and a pumpkin-seed trail mix activity while supplies last. The first 50 kids get a free cookie from Leesburg Cookie Co., which also sells treats. Unpainted pumpkins can be dropped off at the park through November 8.
