About this adventure

The touring Hip Hop Nutcracker returns to The National Theatre on Pennsylvania Avenue for one week before Thanksgiving. Choreographer Jennifer Weber keeps Tchaikovsky's score and the familiar story (Maria-Clara and the Nutcracker Prince battling a gang of mice and visiting the Land of Sweets) but moves it to contemporary New York City, with a cast of twelve hip-hop and contemporary dancers, a DJ, a violinist, digital graffiti projections and MC Da Brat. The theater rates it appropriate for all ages, and it runs about two hours including a 20-minute intermission, which makes it a good first Nutcracker for kids who might fidget through a classical ballet, and a fun one for tweens and teens. Eight performances run Tuesday, November 17 through Sunday, November 22: evenings at 7:30 p.m., a Thursday 1 p.m. matinee and weekend 2 p.m. matinees; the Sunday, November 22 matinee is audio described. Tickets start at $75 and are sold through the theater's box office.
