About this adventure
The Oakland Ice Center, operated by Sharks Ice, runs a Special Hockey program open to all skaters with developmental or physical challenges who would like to play hockey. The program is adapted to the ability level of its participants and puts the emphasis on fun, safety and team spirit. Volunteers help skaters improve balance and coordination, build skills and make new friends, and the rink describes the aim as an "I can do it" attitude that carries over into the rest of a participant's life. The team practices on Friday evenings from 6:00 to 7:00 PM at the downtown Oakland rink on 18th Street. The program is for ages 6 and up with some prior skating experience. Participants can take hockey gear home as part of the program by signing a rental agreement. Families interested in having a child join are asked to email the rink's hockey manager; the page does not print a fee or a season calendar.
