About this adventure

BORP, the Berkeley-based Bay Area Outreach & Recreation Program, runs a youth wheelchair basketball program for children and teens with any type of lower limb disability. Practices are every Saturday from 11 AM to 1 PM in the gym at the James Kenney Community Center on Eighth Street in Berkeley. The program is mixed gender and serves youth from age five through high school graduation, and it welcomes players of every level, from newcomers to team sports to experienced athletes. BORP keeps a fleet of sports chairs on hand for players who need one. BORP describes wheelchair basketball as an exciting, fast-paced game that lets players develop new skills, improve their fitness, build self-confidence and experience being part of a team. Across BORP's youth sports, some participants play just for fun while others join BORP teams that compete against other youth with physical disabilities. The youth sports program dates to 1987, and funding from the City of Oakland's Oakland Fund for Children and Youth helps support it. Newcomers are asked to email or call BORP before their first practice; the page does not print a fee.
