About this adventure

One of the last undeveloped stretches of the Atlantic coast: 4,321 acres and 5.9 miles of beach between Back Bay and the ocean, reaching to the North Carolina line, and the former home of the Wash Woods community. You can't drive in. Visitors come on foot, by bike or by paddle craft through Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, parking at the refuge visitor center. From Nov 1 to Mar 31 the refuge's interior dike trails are closed, so the only way in is hiking or cycling along the beach or by boat. A reserved tram tour from the refuge visits Barbour Hill and the Wash Woods historic site. Visitors must leave the refuge within 30 minutes of sunset.
